Do girls play with dolls, boys with cars?

Purpose, Scope or Aim of the OER

Gender equality education: studying gender stereotypes and attitudes, examining how gender is represented/described in different languages, discussions about students’ own experiences and exploring local communities: How gender roles are presented at home, at school, at work.

Based on EU and UN objectives to promote gender equality.

Students analyse and observe around them the different roles of girls and boys, women and men. They reflect on their own attitudes and prejudices. They compare their observations with their project partners and discuss topics such as family education, education and jobs from a gender perspective, in different disciplines within the curriculum.

Teaching and learning are carried out, as far as possible, in two languages, using partnership teaching.

Short Description of the methods or approaches used in this OER

Students get to know each other through short presentations about themselves and their hobbies. They can also discuss the professions they dream of.

Students read each other’s presentations and comments and/or may request more information/details from their project partners.

The lesson will give students the opportunity to get to know each other better in a shorter time. They will ask each other two questions about their own presentations, from the project workspace.

Step-by-step instructions for teachers to use OER

  • Students will be divided into groups according to gender. Each group will make three different concept maps, one about the main characteristics of the opposite genre, the second about what they like (hobbies, interests), and the third about how they spend their day. They can use tools such as https://bubbl.us/.
  • Students answer through a Google questionnaire. There will be separate questionnaires for girls and boys. Thus, gender differences can be compared. The questionnaires are in English, using a relatively simple language.
  • The girls will analyse the concept maps made by the boys and vice versa.
  • The results of the questionnaires are analysed and studied respecting the gender. The resulting diagrams and percentages will be studied and discussed.
  • Students will be divided into mixed groups in which there will be representatives of different genres. They will analyse and discuss the results. What happens if it goes against nature?
  • Students will make presentations of concept maps, which will also include comments made within the group.
