Step-by-step instructions for teachers to use OER

The teacher introduces and defines a “stereotype” and asks the students if they have heard the word. Give examples as a whole group, if necessary, and include activities, colors, and occupations. Students then begin working in pairs or groups to make lists, be sure to come together as a group to make a list of class stereotypes. In the end a class play the game, “That’s a Stereotype!”.

Purpose, Scope or Aim of the OER

Children will understand that:
• all genders are equal;
• all genders have the right to study for and perform any kind of work they wish to;
• there are no set roles solely belonging to women and men.
In these lessons children will:
• explore different kinds of work in the community
• challenge stereotypes.

Short Description of the methods or approaches used in this OER

Observation, group work, project-based learning, case study.

Step-by-step instructions for teachers to use OER

Ask the children to draw a picture of a nurse, a fire-fighter, a pilot and a hairdresser.
Allow time for the children to complete their drawings. After the children have
finished their pictures, ask them to share their work in a sharing circle.
On the whiteboard, tally the number of nurses drawn that were female,
fire-fighters that were male, hairdressers that were female and pilots that
were male. Ask the children what they notice. Once completed, display
the poster We All Have a Job to Do! Ask, ‘Can a woman be a pilot/fire-fighter?
Can a man be a nurse/hairdresser?’ Discuss the children’s responses.
Point out the other professions on the poster. Discuss. On the whiteboard,
list additional professions that were traditionally done by females but now
males do this work also, and vice a versa. This could be represented on
a Venn diagram. Have children conclude that girls and boys alike, can grow up
to be whatever they would like to be.
